Why This Exists
Come for the GPU fix. Stay for the Intel Mac toolkit.
MacGPUFix+ started with one goal — fix the 2011 MacBook Pro GPU failure that Apple stopped supporting. That problem is solved. But the insight that made it work applies to every Intel Mac Apple has moved on from: great hardware still runs, it just needs the right tools to keep running well.
MacGPUFix+ is becoming the open source maintenance and recovery toolkit for Intel Mac owners — the people Apple left behind when Silicon arrived.
Beautifully built machines deserve a second life
Intel MacBook Pros, iMacs, and Mac minis from 2015–2020 are still fast enough for most work. The GPU failure is a hardware defect in some models, not the end of the machine. A software fix costs nothing. A new laptop costs thousands.
Sustainability
Every Intel Mac kept running is a device that doesn't go into landfill. It's a laptop a student can use for school. It's hardware that still has years of useful life. Repair is one of the most effective things anyone can do to reduce the environmental cost of computing.
Open to everyone
MacGPUFix+ was built because the hardware still works and deserves better than a landfill. Every line of code is open source. There are no paywalls and no accounts required.
The vision
Phase 1 fixes the GPU. Phase 2 has a lot of opportunities to build more for the community. Help us decide what to build next. Are there other issues we can possibly fix through automation? Maybe we can help simplify exploring another OS? Send us a comment with your thoughts.
The goal is a comprehensive, community-validated resource for Intel Mac owners. Not a workaround. A proper toolkit.
